  • Queen's South Africa Medal issued to 9576 Tpr Walter Owen, 10th NZMR Contingent. Owen sailed with the 10th NZMR Contingent on the S.S. Norfolk, arriving just a few days before the end of war. He qualified for the clasp 'South Africa 1902' but this is not present with the medal.


    Walter Owen was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in November 1881, son of George and Sarah Owen. A 'Walter Owen' of a similar age to the medal recipient's died at Dunedin in July 1918, but it has not been determined if this is the same man.


    Medal is correctly impressed 9576 Pte W. OWEN. 2nd REGt 10th N.Z. CONT: Medal and clasp confirmed on WO100/295.
