The Queen's South Africa Medal awarded to Thomas Davison of the 10th NZMR Contingent, who saw active service in WW1 and died from the effects of this service.

Thomas Davison was born at Thames, New Zealand on 6th February 1878. Son of Thomas and Mary Eliza Davison (née Organ). He was working as a miner at Marua near Whangarei when he was selected for service with the 10th NZMR Contingent for service in South Africa. He later worked in mining in the Bay of Plenty and by 1915 was working as a miner in Auckland. He embarked with the 3rd Battalion, NZ Rifle Brigade in early 1916. During the Battle of the Somme in September 1916 Davison suffered from shell shock and was evacuated to hospital. He was subsequently returned to New Zealand where he was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. He died in Auckland on 9th September 1926, his death being attributed to his war service. His next-of-kin was later issued the Memorial Plaque and Scroll.
