Robert Pollock served with the North Dunedin Rifles for at least 30 years, being recorded as attending shooting competitions in 1870. In addition to the LESM, he was awarded the Imperial Volunteer Long Service Medal in 1898.

The medal is correctly engraved for the period No. 123 Pte ROBERT POLLOCK, NORTH DUNEDIN RIFLE VOLSs. The unusual suspender has been sighted in photographs of medals of other recipients from the North Dunedin Rifles. The attached photos show two such examples suggesting the ornate suspenders were locally made in Dunedin specifically for the recipients in 1892.
