Maurice Fitzgerald, a shepherd from Tologa Bay, near Gisborne, served on the Western Front with 3rd Battalion, Otago Infantry Regiment for a few weeks in June 1917 before being evacuated to hospital at Etaples, suffering from dyspepsia. He was subsequently classed as unfit for further service and returned to New Zealand for discharge. During the Second World War, Fitzgerald served as an officer of the Home Guard at Waipoa Station, near Gisborne, where he worked as a sheepfarmer. This service would entitle him to the NZ War Service Medal.
