R Evans, Commissariat Department
NZ War Medal - Commissariat Dept - Evans
The undated New Zealand War Medal issued to R Evans of the Commissariat Department.
R Evans is listed on the medal as a Clerk of the Commissariat Department. There was a Robert Evans, who died in 1920 and claimed service with the Commissariat Department. This 'Robert Evans' is also on the medal roll as a Volunteer Officer, East Coast Expeditionary Force. It is unclear if this all the same man, so there is plenty of scope for further research on this medal.
The obituary for the Robert Evans referred to above states: Mr. Robert Evans, who for 30 years was an officer of the Customs Department, died at his residence in Grant Road on Sunday. The late Mr. Evans saw active service in the Maori war under General Cameron, and also held the rank of volunteer officer of the East Coast Expeditionary Force and also of the Commissariat Department. Mr. Evans was educated at Kilkenny College, Limerick. He leaves a widow, one son, Mr. E. Evans, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Whangarei, and one daughter, Mrs. Watson, of Wellington. (Dominion, 6/4/1920)
Medal is correctly impressed R. EVANS, COMMISST. DEPT
