The New Zealand War Medal, reverse dated 1864 - 1866, awarded to 314 Gunner John Heywood of C Battery, 4th Brigade, Royal Artillery. Heywood served principally during the West Coast campaign of 1864/65 under General Cameron, including the Battle of Nukumaru in January 1865. He also served on General Chute's famous 'march around the mountain' between Wanganui and New Plymouth in January 1866 including the action at Otapawa Pa. Heywood was one of just 33 men of the Royal Artillery, under Lt Carré, to have served on this campaign.
