70 James Saville, 65th Regiment
NZ War Medal - 65th Regt - Saville (Taylor)
The New Zealand War Medal issued to Private James Saville, who enlisted and served in New Zealand as James Taylor.
James Saville, a 19-year-old collier from Yorkshire, enlisted in the 65th (Royal Tigers) Regiment at Barnsley in June 1858. He enlisted and served under the name James Taylor. James embarked on the Sir George Pollock in May 1859, arriving in Auckland in September. James served a full tour in New Zealand, no doubt seeing considerable action in Taranaki and the Waikato, before taking his discharge in Auckland (Otahuhu) in September 1865.
His undated medal is engraved in a style often encountered on medals issued to those who discharged in New Zealand. It is named with his correct name, rather than his alias with the fact he served under an alias noted on the medal roll.
