The NZLESM awarded to Major James Binnie Whyte DSO of the Reserve of Officers in 1928. J B Whyte saw service during the 2nd Anglo-Boer War a lieutenant of 14 Company (Canterbury Section), 5th New Zealand Contingent, receiving the Queen's South Africa Medal and five clasps. Whyte subsequently saw considerable service during the First World War with the New Zealand Army Service Corps. He left New Zealand as a lieutenant with the 2nd Reinforcements and by war's end had been promoted to major and had been awarded the Distinguished Service Order (L.G. 3/6/1918) and had been twice mentioned in dispatches. He served in Egypt throughout the Gallipoli campaign, and then on the Western Front from 1916 - 1918.
