  • The British War Medal and Victory Medal issued to the next-of-kin of 9/426 Thomas James Pedlar, who died of wounds recieved during the Battle of the Somme in October 1916.

     

    Born 13th January 1894 at Invercargill. Son of Samuel and Mary Spackman Pedlar (née Aldred). Served in Egypt 1914-15. Promoted to farrier-corporal in March 1916 before transferring to the Divisional Signal Company, NZ Field Engineers. Wounded 30th September 1916. Died of wounds 7th October 1916 at 36th Casualty Clearing
    Station. Buried Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’abbe, IV. J. 39.

     

    "Farrier-Corporal Thomas James Pedlar, who was wounded on 30th September is now reported to have died of wounds on the7th inst., was a son of Mr Samuel Pedlar of this town and an old boy of North Invercargill school. Deceased was blacksmithingin Winton at the time of his enlistment in the Main Body and was a prominent member of the Winton football club. (SouthlandTimes 21/10/1916)"
