BWM to Sewell, Wellington Regiment. KiA Chunuk Bair
The British War Medal to Edgar Sewell, killed in action on the 8th August 1915 during the desperate battle on the summit of Chunuk Bair.
Edgar Ronald Sewell was born 5th September 1888 at Thornbury, Gloucester, England. Son of Charles and Mary Ann Sewell. He was working as grocer's assistant prior to coming out to New Zealand before the war. At the time of his enlistment in 1914 he was working as a steward at the Royal Hotel, Gisborne.
Sewell attested for service in the NZEF in January 1915, and was posted to 9th (Hawkes Bay) Company, Wellington Infantry Battalion. He served on Gallipoli from June 1915, and was killed in action on the 8th August 1915 during the desperate fighting to retain the summit of Chunuk Bair. His body was never found, and he is commemorated on the Chunuk Bair (New Zealand) Memorial.
