The British War Medal issued to Staff Nurse Elizabeth Cairns, NZANS who served at No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst from June 1918 until the end of the war.

Cairns became a Regsitered Nurse in June 1907 at Auckland Hospital. She worked as a private nurse until 1914, when she was appointes Matron at Opotiki Hospital. On her attestation into the NZEF Cairns claimed previous service at the hospital in Apia, Samoa but this has not been verified.
