81554 Trooper James Richard Easterbrook, 2 NZEF
Double-Issue Memorial Crosses - 20th Armoured
The scarce pair of Memorial Crosses issued to the next-of-kin of James Richard Easterbrook, who was killed in action in Italy whilst serving with 20th NZ Armoured Regiment.
James Richard Easterbrook was born 30th May 1918 at Christchurch, New Zealand. Son of William Richard and Annie Helen Easterbrook (née Kennedy). He married Thelma Rose Linton in 1942, and was working as Truck Driver at Oruhia, north of Marshlands, when he enlisted for service with the 2nd NZEF. Easterbrook's service file has not been obtained, so details of his service are unknown.
Jim, as James was known, served during the Italian campaign with 1 Troop, A Squadron, 20th Armoured Regiment, 4th NZ Armoured Brigade. This unit was equiped with Sherman tanks, and saw constant action throughout 1944. On 26th September, at Ignea Marina on the approach to Rimini, a number of 1 Troop tankers were caught by German artillery, losing eight killed including Jim Easterbrook. He was buried in Ravenna War Cemetery.
As Easterbrook was married, both his mother and his wife receivded Memorial Crosses, both of which are offered here. It is extremely scarce to find both crosses together, where two were issued. Both crosses are correctly impressed 81554 TPR. J.R. EASTERBROOK. with one of the crosses mounted with an Onward broach.
