The Africa Star and Memorial Cross group issued to the next of kin of 24650 John Francis Mitchell who died of wounds received during the famous 2nd NZ Division breakout at Minqar Quaim.

John Francis Mitchell was born on 15th April 1911 at Dunedin, New Zealand. Son of John and Mary Mitchell (née O'Driscoll). He married Esther Francis Allan in 1935 and at the time of his enlistment in 1940, was living in Dunedin with his wife and two children, and working as a truck driver/hotel porter. There is also reference to working for NZ Railways at Hillside. He embarked with the Third Echelon in 1940. Mitchell's service file has not been obtained so details of his service are not yet known. He served with 30th Field Battery, 6th Field Regiment and died of wounds received during the breakout at Minqar Quaim on 28th June 1942. He is buried in Egypt's El Alamein War Cemetery. Whilst he was married, both of his parents were deceased at the time claims would have been made for the Memorial Cross so it is likely this is the only one issued.

The group is unnamed as issued, and the Memorial Cross is correctly impressed 25650 L/BDR. J.F. MITCHELL - the whole group is mounted for wear.
