The Memorial Cross issued to the family of George Albert Johnston who was killed in action during the Battle of Gazala, 13th December 1941.
Born 14th December 1913 at Lower Hutt, son of William Henry and Rosina Jessie Johnston (née Lidston). At the time of his enlistment in the 2nd NZEF he was working as a labourer in Lower Hutt. He embarked with the 3rd Echelon and served with 33rd Battery, 7th Anti-Tank Regiment during Operation Crusader in Libya. He was killed in action on 13th December 1941 during the opening day of the Battle of Galaza. He has no known grave and is commerorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
The cross is correctly impressed 24956 GNR. G.A. JOHNSTON and is suspended on a silver brooch.
