The campaign and Memorial Cross group of six issued to the next-of-kin of 542213 Sapper Walter Alfred White, who was killed in action in August 1944 whilst serving the 5th Field Park Regiment, NZ Engineers.

 

Walter White was born 8th September 1909 at Hunua, near Auckland. Son of Roy Albert and May White (née Hirst). He married Alice Joan Smith in 1938 and by the time of his enlistment they had at least one child but appear to have also divorced. Walter's service record has not been obtained, so full details of his service are not yet known. It is known that he served with 8th Field Company, NZ Engineers before transferring to 5th Field Park Company.

 

On 1st August 1944 near Sant Andrea, south of Florence, Walter was hit by a shell splinter whilst operating a bulldozer, killing him instantly. When he was found he was still holding the controls of the machine. he is buried in Florence War Cemetery.

 

The Memorial Cross is correctly impressed 542213 SPR. W.A. WHITE and the campaign medals are unnamed as issued.
