The 1914/15 Star trio issued to the next-of-kin of 8/213 L/Sgt John Alexander Guthrie, who was killed in action at Polderhoek Chateau in December 1917.

John Guthrie was born in England on 18th June 1888, and at the time of his enlistment in August 1914 was working as a stable-keeper at Gore. He embarked with the Main Body NZEF and landed on Gallipoli on 25th April 1915 with the Otago Infantry Battalion. He was evacuated to Malta in mid-August suffering from enteric. After recovering in England, John deployed to France in July 1916 whrre he served continuously over the next 18 months. He was promoted to lance-sergeant in November 1917. During the attack at Polderhoek Chateau on 3rd December 1917 he was noted as being in the van of the attack, during which he was killed in action.
