10/1596 Pte. Stanley Nicholls, 11th (Taranaki) Company, Wellington Infantry Battalion, NZEF
1914/15 Star Trio - 10/1596 Nicholls - Wounded Gallipoli
The 1914/15 Star trio issued to 10/1596 Stanley Nicholls who was wounded on Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli and then fought on the Western Front for the next three years.
Stanley Nicholls was born 16th September 1881 at Birmingham, England and at the time of his enlistment in December 1914 was working as a farmhand near Hastings. He embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements, and landed on Gallipoli on 9th May 1915. During the Battle of Sari Bair (Chunuk Bair) he was wounded and posted as missing. He was eventually listed as returning to his battalion, his disapperance no doubt a symptom of those chaotic days. In mid September he was evacuated off the peninsula suffering from enteric.
Stanley transferred to the Western Front in 1916, where he served virtually continuously throughout the entire campaign, barring short periods of leave and sickness - a remarkable record of service. He returned to New Zealand in 1919 and died at Tauranga on 15th August 1965.
All medals are correctly impressed 10/1596 PTE. S. NICHOLLS. N.Z.E.F. The star is guaranteed as correctly named, but is unable to be photographed due to the mounting.
