1914/15 Star and BWM to 9/521 Sheed
The 1914/15 Star and British War Medal issued to the next-of-kin of James Brownlie Sheed, who was evacuated from Gallipoli in August 1915 and later died enroute to Malta.
Born 3rd February 1888 at Waikoikoi, New Zealand. Son of James and Mary Sheed (née Brownlie). Served on Gallipoli from May 1915 until being evacuated in August, suffering from dysentery. Died 25th August 1915 on board S.S. Georgian whilst en route to Malta. Buried at sea, commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
Trooper J. B. Sheed (who died of dysentery and was buried at sea on August 25) was the eldest son of Mrs and the late Mr James Sheed, of Mandeville, Southland. He was 28 years of age, and was attached to the Seventh Squadron Otago Mounted Regiment. He left New Zealand with the Main Expeditionary Force, and whilst at the Dardanelles contracted dysentery.
