Captain John Lane Haselden, 5th/8th NZMR and NZEF
NZMR Officers QSA/BWM Group - Haselden
The scarce Queen's South Africa and British War Medal group issued to Capt. John Lane Haselden, who served with 5th and 8th NZMR Contingents during the Boer War, and in the UK with the NZEF during WW1.
John Lane Haselden was born 31st March 1877 at Westport, New Zealand. Son of William Reeve Haselden, a lawyer and judge, and his wife, Maria Simpson Moore. Educated at Wellington College, where he was described as an excellent sportsman, football in particular. He also served as an officer in the school cadets. He studied law, and was working as a law clerk when he was selected for a commision in the 5th NZMR Contingent in March 1900.
Haselden served a full tour in South Africa, seemingly remaining in good health in the harsh environment. During his tour he wrote a lengthy letter describing his actions during early 1901. He returned in July 1901 to a heroes welcome, receiving a civic welcome in his beloved West Coast. He was selected for a second tour of duty, as captain of F Squadron, 8th NZMR.
On his return from South Africa, Haselden continued to work as a lawyer for an insurance firm, and in 1915 was successful in gaining a captain's commission with the Wellington Infantry Regiment, NZEF. He embarked with the 16th Reinforcements, arriving in the UK in October 1916. Within a few short weeks Haselden was placed on the New Zealand Roll to return home. It is unclear what lead to this, but some form of misconduct appears likely.
John Haselden remained in Wellington, working in law. He died 25th August 1949, and is buried in Karori Cemetery.
